ABOUT
Shani Ben Haim is an Israeli artist and graphic designer based in Tokyo.
She worked as a professional contemporary dancer for 15 years, and her background in dance continues to shape the way she approaches the body, movement, rhythm and gesture in her work.
Her practice moves between painting, drawing, mixed media and visual design. Alongside her independent art practice, she has worked for more than a decade in graphic design, with a focus on culture, dance, branding and digital projects. Her visual language is direct, intuitive and expressive, moving between raw bodily states and graphic structure.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The body and the face in my paintings are the places where inner states become visible. The figures are fragmented, layered or concealed, moving between vulnerability and protection, between the strange and the familiar. I am interested in the masks we construct and in the distance between what is exposed and what remains private.
I work primarily with oil pastel, oil sticks and acrylic. My process is direct and physical. The marks of the working process remain visible; colours collide, layers are built up, scratched into and transformed. I am drawn to the immediacy of this process and to the tension between the raw and the abstract, and the graphic and the figurative.
Frames, recurring patterns and geometric forms often appear around, near or within the figures. They function as forms of containment—an attempt to hold something that, at times, also slips away.
My background in contemporary dance continues to influence the way I understand the body—through weight, tension, gesture and presence. Even when the figures are still, I think of them as bodies carrying an inner state.
For me, each work exists somewhere between exposure and protection, control and instinct, between what is shown and what remains hidden.
הגוף והפנים בציורים שלי הם המקומות בם מצבים פנימיים הופכים לנראים. הדמויות מפורקות, שכבתיות או מוסתרות, ונעות בין הפגיע למוגן, בין הזר למוכר. מעניינות אותי המסכות שאנחנו בונים והמרחק שבין החשוף לפרטי.
החומרים אתם אני עובדת הם לרוב פסטל שמן, מקלות שמן ואקריליק. העבודה שלי היא ישירה ופיזית. הסימנים של תהליך העבודה נשארים גלויים, הצבעים מתנגשים; שכבות נבנות, נחרטות ומשתנות.
אני נמשכת למיידיות של התהליך הזה ולמתח שבין הגולמי והמופשט, לבין הגרפי והפיגורטיבי.
מסגרות, דגמים חוזרים וצורות גיאומטריות - מופיעים לעיתים סביבן ובקרבתן של הדמויות או בתוכן, ומתפקדים כצורות של הכלה או ניסיון להחזיק משהו שלעיתים גם נשמט.
הרקע שלי במחול עכשווי ממשיך להשפיע על האופן שבו אני מבינה את הגוף — דרך משקל, מתח, מחווה ונוכחות.
גם כשהדמויות עומדות במקום, אני חושבת עליהן כעל גופים שנושאים בתוכם מצב פנימי.
עבורי, כל עבודה מתקיימת במקום כלשהו בין חשיפה להגנה, שליטה לאינסטינקט, בין מה שמוצג לבין מה שנשאר מוסתר.
